September 2008
Welcome back to school. The children and I have really enjoyed our time together. We had a great first week exploring our classroom and the school. We have created classroom rules and expectations, which has helped us establish a positive learning environment. Open House went well. The students were very excited, and it was great to meet all of you. If you were not able to attend and have questions for me, feel free to contact me by note, phone, or email.
I’m looking forward to a
wonderful year!
This Month
In September, we will be reviewing many of the concepts taught in Kindergarten. This helps the children activate their prior knowledge. We will also practice classroom and school routines. In reading, we will continue learning what it looks like to read to yourself, read to a friend, and work in small groups with a teacher. In math, we will compare numbers, order numbers, and practice writing numbers. We will also work with tally marks, pennies, nickels, and telling time to the hour. Please read the unit letters for more information. Our class started “Writer’s Workshop” this week. The children really enjoy this, and are coming up with great topics to write about! We will continue to write daily throughout the year. This month, we will focus on spacing, periods, and capitalizing. In social studies, we are beginning to explore the world of maps. It will be an exciting month!
Homework
Homework will be given almost every night, so please check your child’s folder daily. This gives them a time to practice the skills we have learned that day. It should only take 10 –20 minutes. Please try to read every night!
