Overview of our 6th grade year
Research and Problem Solving
Our research project is focusing on debate and problem-solving. Rather than completing a traditional student-directed study (SDS), students are working on several projects that will involve a different kinds of research. These projects involve a series of debates, a mock trial and working on solutions for real world problems.
Debate: We will begin the year with students learning about and conducting formal debates. This will require all Quest skills including, research, problem solving, critical thinking, logical reasoning, presentation skills, thinking on your feet, and many more. Students will be given a topic to research, and a position (positive or negative) to debate. Debate information packet
Fairy Tale Jury Trials: After learning how to debate, 6th grade will conduct two fairy tale jury trials. They will learn the jury trial process and roles. Students will then act out the parts of attorney, witnesses, defendants, judges and jury. Students will argue their case to the jury and the jury will follow deliberation procedures to find a verdict.
Hazardous Materials Simulation: Students must learn how to resolve a simulated hazardous materials spill. They will listen to guest speakers from the city, county and state and learn about the many different agencies involved in resolving a major incident. Students will research chemicals and create a plan for how to properly handle an emergency incident.

Creativity
Developing and creating your own personal museum is our creative project for this year. Each museum will inclued at least six different rooms, each with a different theme that is related to you. This is a fun and valuable project that allows you to use your creative thinking and problem solving skills. It also gives you the opportunity to think about your past, the present, and your future.
Critical and Creative ThinkingWe are continuing to explore and use Bloom's Taxonomy, Six Thinking Hats, the creative problem solving process.
