This is my first year at Discovery. This has been a great move for me as I really enjoy working with our Discovery students. In addition to being the counselor, I work closely with our teen parents as the Family Advocate and teacher. Discovery has an Early Head Start Program for children from ages one month to three years of age. Several of our teen moms bring their children to school with them and the children spend the day in the Early Head Start Family Center. This is a real benefit for both the teen moms and their babies. Each teen mom spends one class block each day in the center with her child. In addition, they have total access to their child throughout the day. In addition to the family center, teen parents attend meetings twice each week. At these meetings they hear speakers who include folks from the Sexual Assault Center, a nutritionist, parent education, health care for infants, mental health support, Amee Barlet (EHS Coordinator of Discovery Early Head Start Center). As school counselor, I am here to provide support for all Discovery students. I support students with personal counseling as well as helping them with career counseling.
