SKHS Student Heads to Broadway

Drew Boening, who is a lifelong resident of Port Orchard and a senior at South Kitsap High School, won second place in the August Wilson Monologue Competition. This event was held at the Seattle Repertory Theatre last Tuesday evening in the second of two rounds of competition involving approximately 40 kids from all over Washington State. He won a $250 scholarship, season passes to the Seattle Rep, and the opportunity to travel to New York May 5-8 to participate in the National Finals on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre. There he will compete against approximately 23 kids from across the country.

Drew only began acting this past fall, when he joined South Kitsap's acting ensemble, led by Scott Yingling. Since that time, Drew has played Lord Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet in Revenge, an original work by Scott Yingling, and is currently rehearsing for his role as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily. Drew is a well-rounded, hard-working student who plans to attend Olympic College next fall. He is most interested in studying theater and psychology. This summer, he plans to continue pursuing acting roles while also working for Kitsap County Public Works' summer employment program in the Surface and Stormwater unit.
