The wind is here! After receiving an Office of Naval Research Grant last year, CTE Agriculture Science teachers Mike Sheppard and Sara Hatfield, along with Chance Gower, instructional specialist at South Kitsap High School, have been working to construct a wind turbine. You can now see the 33 foot tall, 12 foot wide wind tower standing on the South Kitsap High School Campus on the South end of the football field. The tower will be running in a few weeks after inspections and meter installations have been done.
The program is aimed at generating innovative projects that cultivate student interest and participation in science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM). The tower will now provide students with the opportunity to engage in hands on learning and inspire the interest in STEM. We plan to have students monitor weather conditions continually throughout the year and connect weather conditions to the production of wind power and solar power. It will be a marvelous learning opportunity for students to graph peak and low wind production periods for the year, as well as the daily findings for wind production highs and lows.
