Each year, the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) honors individuals and organizations with Regional Community Leadership Awards. The ceremony for the Olympic Educational Service District 114 was held at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino and representatives from each school district were in attendance. South Kitsap School District recognized the Kurt Wagner Education Fund for their work in supporting students and teachers across the district. Superintendent Karst Brandsma, Board President Greg Wall, and Board Vice President Rebecca Diehl presented the award to Laurie Wagner, Jane Douglas, Darek Grant, and Mayor Rob Putaansuu from the Kurt Wagner Education Fund group.

The Kurt Wagner Education Fund operates in memory of Dr. Kurt Wager, former educator, principal, and Deputy Superintendent, to support educational needs in South Kitsap School District. In 2016, the Kurt Wagner Education Fund awarded four scholarships totaling $3,000, six classroom grants totaling $3,000, as well as $1,000 to the South Kitsap Music program and $1,000 to South Kitsap athletics. The fund also holds more than $90,000 toward an endowment fund for future needs. The commitment to the needs of current and future students in South Kitsap School District is commendable in all respects and it is a fitting way to honor the memory of a truly great South Kitsap educator and leader.
